What isAI literacy?
AI literacy means understanding what AI can and cannot do, and using it safely and effectively at work. Since 2 February 2025, the EU AI Act requires any organisation using AI to ensure its staff have enough of it.
What AI literacy actually covers.
It starts with recognising AI output: knowing when an answer holds up and when a model is just confidently making something up. It covers failure modes like hallucination and outdated information, and privacy basics: what you do and don't put in a prompt. It ends with a feel for when to trust a result and when to set it aside.
The obligation, in plain words.
The EU AI Act applies to any organisation that uses or deploys AI systems, from a marketing team running ChatGPT to a company with its own AI tool. 'Sufficient' literacy means proportionate to the role and the risk, not one certificate for everyone. Nobody is showing up tomorrow to hand out fines; it's a duty of care, not a panic button.

- AI literacy is the ability to understand what an AI system can and cannot do, and to use it safely and effectively at work. It isn't a diploma, it has simply become a basic skill, like typing or reading a spreadsheet.

- Yes. Since 2 February 2025, the EU AI Act requires organisations using AI to ensure sufficient AI literacy among their staff. The law doesn't list mandatory courses; it asks for demonstrably sufficient knowledge, matched to what your team actually does with AI.
- Who does the AI literacy obligation apply to?
- Any organisation in the EU that uses or provides AI systems, from a one-person business to a corporate, regardless of sector. How much the duty weighs depends on the risk level of your AI use: the higher the risk to people, the more thorough the knowledge needs to be. For most small businesses using tools like ChatGPT or Copilot, it mostly comes down to common sense and a few clear ground rules.

- Start with a workshop that shows what AI can and can't handle in your own work, using real examples from your business instead of general theory. Then set a few simple rules: which tools are allowed, what data never goes into a prompt, and who checks an AI output before it goes out the door. Repeat it every quarter, because the tools change faster than most training keeps up with.
